The Northwestern Turnpike, U.S. 50, was urged by George Washington in 1784 as an all Virginia route to Ohio. It was authorized in 1827, started in 1831 and completed to the Ohio River at Parkersburg in 1838. It is a monument to the skill of its engineers, Colonel Claudius Crozet, who had been an officer in Napoleon's army, and Charles Shaw.
